Bob Schneider is a fixture on the Austin scene, having kicked around for years in various bands before embarking on a solo career in 1999. Born in Michigan and partially raised in Germany, he dropped out of the University of Texas at El Paso to front his first band, the funk and rap outfit Joe Rockhead. The band released three independent albums before disbanding immediately prior to signing with a major label. A stint with a jammy, slightly Phishy outfit called the Ugly Americans followed, which experienced some success as an opening act for the Dave Matthews Band. In 1997, Schneider went on to co-found the Scabs, where he made a further name for himself as a crotch-grabbing frontman. He then became a solo act in 1999, although performing at first under the band name Lonelyland.

During the sometimes contentious public forum portion of the May 22 Newbury Schools Board of Education meeting, board members and school officials reiterated to the audience that despite dwindling enrollment, the district will remain independent, at least for now.

How do you move more than 3 million recordings? That's the predicament facing the Archive of Contemporary Music in New York. Its collection of popular music rivals that of the Library of Congress. But this archive is independent. It doesn't get money from the government. So when its rent went up, it was forced to leave its longtime Manhattan headquarters. The archive has just announced that its collection will move to two separate locations outside the city. Reporter Jon Kalish has the story.
Dorothy Bishop proposes that an independent body is set up to analyse or oversee the data. But this defeats the idea of open data. It is only by full access to the data, that full scrutiny can take place. It is only by scrutinizing data that e.g. potential anomalies, errors and outliers can be spotted. Unexpected issues with methodology might only be spotted by scrutinizing the data. But, also, full access is needed for investigators to experiment with the data, to look for unexpected patterns, or to constructively build upon previous publications. It is widely recognised that publicly funded data should be available for the public good.
